Printer Spying

| | Comments (0) | Digg! digg it?
Everyone loves a good conspiracy theory, and this one may be well founded:

In a purported effort to identify counterfeiters, the US government has succeeded in persuading some color laser printer manufacturers to encode each page with identifying information.
The code has been located by Paul Weihe and he thinks it is recording a timestamp and a serial number

Movie Review: Paris, je t'aime

Paris, je t'aime

Lindsey and I ended up renting this movie after we decided that we had already seen everything else at Blockbuster that didn't look terrible. We knew nothing about this movie going in, so we were surpised to see 2 hours worth of 8-10 minute clips play with no reference to one another. I kept saying "I wish it would go back to the last plot". So in that sense, some of the clips were incredibly engaging, but I was always left wanting to know the rest of the story. On the flip side, I wasn't stuck watching the less interesting clips for very long.

Each of the 18 clips are representational of one of the 20 Arrondissements of Paris. Each segment was directed by a different director and the acting cast ranges from the famous to the unknown. I was somewhat dissappointed by this film, not because of the quality of the cinematography, writing, or the acting (all of which were well above par), but because the format is so unusual. Finally, at the very end, the film gained some much needed resolution, and paints a very interesting picture of what it is like to live in Paris. If you are the artsy/indie type, you will probably really enjoy this film. Im ready to go to Paris now!

New Zealand Denies Obese Immigrants

New Zealand prevents obese people from immigrating.

"Robyn Toomath, an endocrinologist, of the New Zealand campaign group Fight the Obesity Epidemic, said the country could not afford to admit migrants who would be a drain on health services. 'You can see the logic in assessing if there is a significant health cost associated with this individual, and that would be a reason for them not coming,' she said."
Will obese people be treated similiarly to smokers now in the eyes of insurance companies?

Movie Review: Knocked Up

Knocked Up

I heard from my friend Leah that this movie was pretty good, so Matt and I ended up renting it. We tried to rent Chuck and Larry but Iggle Video was out of all of their copies- we'll have to get that one next time. The concept is basically that this girl Allison gets pregnant after a one night stand with Ben Stone- an illegal from Canada whose only "job" is making a website that lists nude scenes in movies. Anyways, I'm a huge Grey's Anatomy fan so I was super excited to see Katherine Heigl in a movie and I think she did an excellent job (even better than she does in Grey's). There were so many funny/recognizable supporting characters that it felt like an Adam Sandler movie. My one warning is that there is a very surprising shot during the birth scene! (We rented the unrated version, so I'm not sure whats on the rated one.) But I definately recommend watching this movie when youre in the mood to laugh

Jay-Z flashing Euros, not Dollars

The American dollar has officially fallen as a status symbol. In his newest music video, Jay-Z flashes stacks of 500-euro bills. For those of you keeping score at home, €500 is now equal to about $730.

Move over, goldenoodles and yorkiepoos. Designer cat breeds are the next big thing. Lifestyle Pets is currently selling the Ashera, a cross between an exotic cat and a house cat starting at $22,000. ($28,000 if you prefer a hypoallergenic one.) The cat weighs up to 30lbs, and the price includes:

- 10 Year consultation access to Dr. Roland Tripp, internationally recognized animal behaviorist.

- Airline certified electronic climate controlled cat transporter

- One set of nail caps already applied (these are vinyl nail caps applied to your kitten's claws that effectively cover the claws so no damage occurs to furniture, etc.)

Museum Review: Bodies... the Exhibition

BODIES... the Exhibition

So, I went to this exhibit in Columbus with my boyfriend Matt and his friend Wes. I was surprised to see that it was located in a strip mall next to a Staples instead of in a museum, but once you get inside, it looks like a completely professional, well-designed museum space.

The exhibit consists of human anatomy specimens, both in small parts and in full body form. The bodies were preserved by switching all of the water in the tissues with rubber. Some of the bodies are posed as if they are dribbling a basketball or drawing. The exhibit is divided into sections like skeletal system, circulatory system, etc. The circulatory system was especially cool. They injected a substance into the bodies that turned all of the arteries and veins into hard colored plastic, and then chemically disolved the rest of the body, leaving a huge and intricate system of tubes that looked a lot like coral.

I definately would recommend going to see this exhibit if at all possible. It is an amazing experience to actually see the systems that you carry and which keep you alive everyday. I think it is in Columbus through December and then moving to Cincinnati. My only major complaint is that photography is not allowed. IMHO, non-flash photography should be encouraged at this type of thing, especially since its not something you will probably ever have the chance to photograph again.
